There are four types of Valentine's Day:

The first is where you make no effort, ignore it, and hope that when your partner said they didn’t really celebrate it they meant it. If I were you, I’d do some subtle things and be ready to surprise them if the pout appears at any point during the day.

For example, you could wear a pink shirt, plan to go to the supermarket and pick up the ingredients for their favourite dish on your way home from work, have a card – or even a plan for a future event – which you can whip out as required.

The second type are the ones who like to celebrate it at home. A bunch of long stemmed roses or another type of plant are delivered with breakfast in bed.

My partner usually wears one of the outfits I like him best in; he has a series of these jumpers which are so soft, it makes me want even more cuddles. In the evening he makes me his pulling dish, Vitello al Limone and I don’t have to lift a finger. This simple gesture, which is repeated on anniversaries and special days, goes a long way.

The third are the dates which have been really thought about and planned out. The ones you are likely to see on social media the next day, with a proposal at the end of the reel… For these, every detail needs to be perfect; making sure you are both appropriately dressed for the occasion and viral fame it may bring. You’ll need a coat with pockets to carry any prompts, tickets and the ring and smart enough clothes for the whole event.

Do take care of your shoes too - we take notice of them. And aftershave; I know of someone who was dumped as he’d forgotten this small detail and the girlfriend thought he hadn’t bothered to get properly dressed. Lucky escape for him methinks but at the time he was gutted.

And last and most popular – especially this year – is the romantic restaurant reservation. Dress at your finest, add some extra detail, wear a suit, a real suit not a jogging suit like last year, and add a pocket square or a waistcoat to show you have really made the effort.

Have lots of conversations ready so you can chatter and entertain them throughout the meal, and not be one of those couples who search the room, look out of the windows, down at their hands or worse their phones, instead of speaking. And you can always have a few jokes stored – who doesn’t love a man that makes them laugh.

If you're alone this Valentine’s day, show yourself some love. Eat well, dress well and plan to do something you like to do with people you enjoy. Who knows, you may have to refer back to this piece in 12 month’s time!
